The McCallum Theatre opened in 1988 as a 1,100-seat performing arts center featuring European opera-house acoustics, hosting ballet, Broadway productions, classical music, and jazz from October through April.
The McCallum Theatre brought professional performing arts to the Coachella Valley when it opened to the public in January 1988, with an opening night tribute to Bob Hope featuring performances by pianist Van Cliburn and dancers from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Organized as the Friends of the Cultural Center in 1973 by Coachella Valley business and cultural leaders, the venue was designed with 1,100 seats arranged in three tiers with the acoustic properties of a European opera house. The McCallum operates an annual season from mid-October through early April, bringing ballet companies, Broadway productions, jazz ensembles, and classical orchestras to audiences in Palm Desert.
Palm Desert's cultural infrastructure extends beyond the McCallum to include the Living Desert Zoo and Botanical Garden, a 1,200-acre preserve founded in 1970 to protect the desert ecosystem and educate visitors about desert wildlife and habitats, and the Artists Council Artists Center at the Galen, which features rotating exhibitions of sculpture, painting, photography, and contemporary design. The city's El Paseo district hosts more than 30 galleries representing the Greater Palm Springs area's leading concentration of art spaces, and Palm Desert maintains a permanent public art collection of nearly 80 works installed throughout parks, libraries, and community spaces.
